The IDF Beijing 2001 is always going to be big for far eastern firms, but it seems that MeeGo are looking to make a big splash too with a new look. China is the ideal marketplace for MeeGo and it looks as if they are going for it out there, but so far, all we know about the Meego device is that it has a 10.1 inch display, is 10 mm thick and will be running a Z670 1.50 GHz processor with around 1 GB of RAM This is what MeeGo has to say about it service; MeeGo will provide expanded features, improved performance, and a richer user experience for netbooks. With its advanced support for touch and connectivity, MeeGo is a compelling platform for netbook and tablet creation and application development. MeeGo is a light-weight, scalable, fast-booting and a brand-able operating system. Source [Netbook News] a 10.1" Netbooks, china, Meego, Netbook Reviews, netbooks
a

We have not seen many laptop or netbook cooling pads for a while, but this one from Targus is a very interesting design and therefore demands to be looked at. Overheating can be a major issue for laptops and netbooks this can cause damage to the internal operating parts and ultimately render the device useless. This cooling pad from Targus draws air through the sides and up underneath the computer, this allows the computer to suck in the cool air and to keep everything working at the correct temperatures. Product Description for the Targus Chill Mat for 10.2 Inch Netbooks; The Targus Netbook Chill Mat features two fans that generate cool air to keep the netbook running efficiently and to help prevent overheating. The Chill Mat can be also used in the office to protect furniture from heat damage, or on the go to protect your lap from heat. Rubber grips keep your netbook in place to provide a sturdy workspace. The device plugs directly into the USB port so no additional power is required. Priced at $23.61 Source [Life Style Phone] a Chill, Laptop Accessories, laptop cooler, mat, netbooks, targus
a

All the talk of the demise of the netbook may have been a bit premature, shipments for this year are already looking to touch the thirty million mark. While there is a new a processor too, the Atom N570 is clocked at 1.66 GHz was seen at the CES 2011 in Las Vegas, it will replace the N550 with its 1.5 GHz. One of the machines expected to use this processor will be Lenovo, their IdeaPad S100 netbook is due out by the end of February, but others are sure to follow, especially the likes of Samsung with the NC110. However so far it seems that Asus are yet to decide what machine they are going to use first up with this processor, or are they really preparing to slow down the production of netbooks in order to concentrate on the more exciting tablet market! 2011 is going to be an exciting year.
For a moment the competition were feeling a bit of relief when report were going around that Acer were going to be phasing out all of their netbooks in favour of tablets. However, the company have issued a statement that completely denies that they are thinking about this action. In fact it seems that Acer will not be even be launching any new tablets with the latest Sandy Bridge platform from Intel, so it seems that for now at least netbooks will definitely be on the Acer Menu! “Acer recognises that the computer market is changing: As PCs are no longer used to only create content but are more and more becoming consumption tools, new devices and new form factors are appearing,” the manufacturer said in a statement. “This means the range of devices available to users is getting wider and tablets are just another piece of the mosaic. Therefore they will find their space next to netbooks and notebooks, without taking over.” Source [Eee PC] a acer, Acer Aspire Netbooks, netbooks, New Netbooks, Tablets
a

As from next week, the Dell Mini 10 will have the option for GPS, this helps in two ways. The first is that if the computer is stolen and the thieves do not disable the device, it can be tracked. The second and a bit more like big brother is that companies who issue these computers to travelling staff will be able to see where they are. The hardware consists of a Broadcom A GPS card with built in Skyhook Wi-Fi locationing system, this operates indoors as well as outside. There is also Loki, which can generate 2D, and 3D map views of the location. There is no mention of cost yet, but it is available from next week in the US, with other regions following in the future.
The time may have come when netbooks are given away for free by the mobile carriers, according to the Head of a Linux advocacy group, the Linux foundation. He was speaking at a Beijing forum of prominent Chinese business people. Many companies such as AT&T already sell subsidised 3G netbooks in the US and in fact the same is beginning to happen in China, but to actually give a netbook away in the similar manner as a mobile phone is, may just be one step too far. However, the prediction coming out of this meeting is that within a year a Linux based netbook will be free to the user who signs up with a certain carrier.
Traditionally these computers that can be held in one hand have been available for around the $200 mark, but recently some of these deals have been highlighted as being refurbished or second hand. A buyer needs to be careful as to what they are buying and where from. However, for computer buyers in Taiwan, Asus have been slashing the prices of the 7″ and 8.9″ Eee PC models. It is quite possible to pick up a brand new Asus Eee PC 701 in Taiwan for around $150 and in China the 8.9″ Asus can be bought for just $220, it would be nice if they shared the love around!
UPDATE: ASUS T91 Available on Amazon.co.uk! UPDATE: ASUS T91 Available on Amazon.com! Consumers in the UK are likely to be getting rather frustrated with the computer maker from Taiwan; Asus have yet again delayed the launch of the cool looking T91. The 8.9″ convertible netbook had initially been delayed to the 22nd June due to logistical issues. Now it seems that the new delivery date has been set at towards the end of July, the company guarantee that there will not be any more delays, the company want buyers to be totally happy with their purchase, well it would help if it was delivered in the first place. In 2008 the market total was just twelve and half million. This increase represents a five fold increase in sales and it has been estimated to be worth around twenty two per cent of the total computer market. There is one issue that of the processor, the term netbook is normally associated with Intel, but mini laptop makers are looking at alternative chips and therefore perhaps we may be looking at smartbooks now.
UPDATE: Acer Aspire One 751 now available on Amazon for $418.99! The all new or not so new Acer Aspire One 751 is a far cry from those early days, but not so different to the recent released versions. This machine has a slimmer profile, easy to use keyboard, bright hi-res display and a supposedly long battery life; these are of course the good points, which actually seem to outweigh the bad points such as single touchpad button and performance.
It may come as a surprise that there are not many consumers who know what the difference is between a notebook and netbook computer. In fact, there may even be some industry experts who are equally confused about the terms. Some people think that is has something to do with size, well in theory it could be that, but there are certain things that full sized laptops can do that their smaller brothers cannot, like watching and burning DVD’s. Netbooks would traditionally have slower processors and lower resolution displays; this will make watching video and playing games not the best experience. It turns out that some comsumers have bought a netbook thinking that it was a smaller version of a laptop. However, it turns out that they did not mind either.
Fortunately, there are not too many hybrid laptops around, the only one that is popular and available is the MSI’s 10-inch Wind U115 Hybrid, this uses the 8 Gb solid state drive (SSD) and also at the same time has a 160 Gb hard drive (HHD). This means that the user can switch between the two in order to save on power usage, by disabling the HHD the user can effectively get more out of the battery, which can come in very useful, when power is limited. However, Microsoft does not seem to agree and are trying to ban the computer makers from using Windows XP in laptops that have a hybrid storage system.
