The Samsung R610 continues the trend of good looking Samsung laptops. Plus, the $1050 laptop has some great specs to offer for the price. With a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo and 3 GB of RAM, the R610 is a solid home computer. At 6 pounds, it’s amazing the 16 display and internal setup don’t weigh it down more. But, at that size, are we leaving too much of the portability behind? Propably. And that’s the downfall of the R610. Because it’s larger and less portable, it doesnt stand out against otehr 16 inch laptops. It’s middle of the road, at best. But, that isn’t the end for the R610. This is a solid laptop with great design, so it’s worth comparing to your other 16″ choices. Don;t go rush and buy this laptop, but include it in the group to choose from. In the end, you’ll probably go with something else. But this is a good benchmark.
The $1000 Acer Aspire 6930G is a great candidate for a home media machine. Offering an attractive design for an Acer laptop and combining some pretty stellar specs for the price point. The 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor will keep you app switching and the 16″ display and the Nvidia GeForce 9600M will allow for some minor gaming and great movie watching. Even without the Blu-Ray drive, this litlte laptop is powerful enough to get you through for a few more years. A little heavy at 7.2 pounds, the 6930G is a true laptop, so you can expect the full package here. Overall, at under $1000, you won’t beat the Acer for a simple home media machiene. Sure, there are better laptops out there. But this system is ready to go for a good price. If you’re eying it, go ahead and buy. Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 Processor Speed: 2 GHz RAM: 4 GB Weight: 7.2 lbs.
eMachines have always been the low-cost alternative. But now with netbooks flooding the market, eMachines needs to step up its game. So, the company is releasing a full sized laptop for less than $400. Is the eMD620 woth it? Let’s see. As a Best Buy exclusive, this notebook is subpar. An Athlon 2650e with 1.6 GHz won’t get you very far in the office of on the net and the low 1 GB of RAM will surely lead to slowdown within a year. Plus, the little thing us pretty ugly, sports low battery life and only has two USB ports. Overall you are looking at a bad netbook with the only advantage being a bigger screen. Why not go buy a real netbook insted? There is no reaosn for this laptop to exist. Boo. Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Processor: AMD Athlon 2650e Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz RAM: 1 GB Weight: 5.3 lbs.
The Gateway P-7811FX is Gateway’s first retail laptop available only through Best Buy. It’s a little older, but I thought it was worth taking a look at because its specs and design are really holding up against some really recent additions to the laptop market. Obviously, just by looking at it, you can see that the 7811FX fits right in with any number of current laptops in the design category. The orange piping is like totally right now. (Sorry.) But beyond looks, who are the specs on this $1,499 laptop? First, the 17-inch screen and the availability of a Blu-Ray drive make this a likely candidate for the center of a home media setup or a first-rate desktop replacement. The internal setup won;t have you gaming anytime soon, but reviews all over the web have found the Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB or Ram and the nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS to be substantial enough to cover your media needs. That includes solid load times for editing programs like After Effect and Photoshop. Overall, this slightly older Gateway notebook might be one of the best choices for the price this holiday season. Just because it’s a few months old, doesn’t … Continue reading →
a

We took a look at the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402 the other day, so I figured comparing the new Toshiba Satellite M305-S4835 specs might be appropriate. The M305, which runs about $1,050, is almost identical to it’s Best Buy cousin. However, the M305 is set up to be a little more powerful at home. Primarily, the M305 can be used as a home media center, with a nice display size and a reasonable processor setup. From what I can gather though, the M305 is two things; sort of standard and really adequate. And that’s great, right? For a smidgen over $1,000, you should expect a standard, adequate laptop. No frills here, but nothing huge missing, either. And while it’s sorting specs comparable with the more expensive MacBook, PC Magazine seemed unimpressed with the M305 in speed tests, making me wonder if there are better Mac beaters out there. Probably. The specs: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 Processor Speed: 2 GHz RAM: 4 GB Weight: 5.5 lbs. Display Size: 14.1 inches Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD Storage Capacity: 320 GB Networking Options: 802.11 n Primary Optical Drive: Dual-Layer DVD+/-RW Get more info at … Continue reading →
a

Comparable in a number of ways to the Lenovo ThinkPad SL300, the Samsung Q310 happens to some up a little short in the realm of business notebooks. First, a straight specs to price comparison between the two notebooks shows more power in the SL300 for less price. The $1,200 – $1,300 Q310 holds up when it comes to basic performance, sure. And the battery life is solid, if not spectacular like the SL300. Overall, it comes down to a direct price and spec comparison. While the Q310 won;t let you down on performance, it wont beat out the SL300 either. And while graphics may not be the most important option when it comes to business, Samsung offers no upgrade to the built-in Intel graphics setup. So, when other 13″ laptops with the same, or better, specs (the SL300) exist. Why go this way? the same thing could be said of other comparable laptops. If you really want to spend the extra couple hundred, why not get the extra features that are hot right now? If you are dropping $1,300, your keyboard better be backlit, for example. My advice, save the money and go with the Lenovo. What do you think? … Continue reading →
a

Sorry about the picture, but it seems for all the rage being created about the Acer Aspire 8930G, there are very few quality pictures of the high-end gaming machine out there. But, there is a lot of information and buzz about the specs, and a lot of people are talking about the 8930G’s gaming setup. Not only does the 8930 feature a super fast 7,200 rpm hard drive, the GForce 9700 GT graphics setup, 5.1 sound support and 18.4″ HD display make this case a bundle of gaming goodies. And at $1,699, the 8930G is reasonable in price without suffering on specs. Laptop Mag was impressed giving the 8930G four out of five stars, saying: The system’s powerful processor, improved graphics muscle, and striking design makes it one of the best desktop replacements around. There seems to be more good than bad about the 8930. There are a few complaints about the trackpad, but when is that news when it comes to notebooks? If you game with an Acer, let me know what you think in the comments. Check out some of the specs: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz … Continue reading →
a

Another laptop available through Best Buy, the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402 is based on consumer research and the final product reflects that. Stylistically, the Satellite E105-S1402 has a funky finish case and a backlit keyboard. But more than that, it packs some solid specs for a under $2,000 notebook. However, some flimsy plastic and poor interior design pull down what could be a spectacular setup. The folks over at Laptop Mag had some nice things to say, with the overall verdict seeming a little “Good, but blah.” In fact, for comparable specs at a comparable price, they even suggested checking out a MacBook. I can see that. The basic specs: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz RAM: 4 GB Weight: 4.9 lbs.
The next laptop in a long line of Dell business machines, the Dell Latitude E6400 is getting some pretty good reviews around the net. For a starting price of $1,888, the E6400 comes with some pretty powerful business specs. The 5.6 pound weight is mostly from the 9-cell battery that provides better life on long flights, so the extra weight is acceptable. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor is enough to run even the most invasive business programs, and PC Magazine seems pretty impressed with the overall speed of the setup. As far as business notebooks go, you are probably looking for reliable speed and solid battery life. For under $2,000, it’s going to be hard to find a setup better than Dell’s. But, you know. It’s a Dell. The specs, as it were: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Business Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz RAM: 2 GB Weight: 5.6 lbs.
For HP’s first consumer 13-inch notebook, the company too the advice of consumers and put out a powerful, reasonably thin laptop that works best for home couch computing. Simple design perks like a backlit keyboard and a remote make it competitive with the MacBook. Superior specs like the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor, the built-in 4 GB of RAM and a GForce 9300M graphic set make the HP Pavilion dv3510nr a fast, powerful system for minor gamers and professional web surfers. Laptop Magazine praised the dv3510nr for it’s superior WiFi abilities but pinged the HP for poor battery life. cNet also liked the dv3510nr, noting the notebooks fun features like a fingerprint reader and excess of ports. However, both reviewers noticed the sluggish touchpad. So, if you end up with a dv3510nr, make sure to add an optical mouse to the shopping cart. Overall, the dv3510nr is a great laptop for the couch, as you will want to stay close to a power outlet. Available through Best Buy, the dv3510nr has a great price point of $1,100. For that price, you can afford a power strip and a new mouse to go with it.
Business on the go can get rough sometimes. That’s why it might be important to have a laptop with a rugged case to get the job done on the farm or construction site. That’s where the General Dynamics Itronix GoBook MR-1 comes in. Built to take a beating with a case out of a sci-fi movie, the MR-1 is a solid business machine, as well. Looking at the specs alone, you see a pretty standard laptop, with a slower 1.2 GHz Intel Core Solo processor and 1 GB of RAM. But in the case of the MR-1, specs aren’t everything. The case and rugged setup are the draws. The frame has been shock, drop and temperature tested to military standards and one can only assume that the huge $5,650 price tag is for all the development. General Dynamics has also engineered the box to allow for tons of expansion options (for a cost, of course). The con list is substantial, but not a deal breaker. With the tiny 5.6 inch display, don’t expect to do much more than word processing, book keeping, or maybe looking at design specs for your latest build job. The MR-1′s specs are just OK, with … Continue reading →
a

Well, Dell. What can you do? If you are one of the largest suppliers of PC laptops out there, I suppose you don’t have to offer the best products, as you have a built-in market share and name recognition. I’ve never been a huge Dell fan for this reason, and the new Dell Inspiron Mini 12 laptop does little to regain my faith in the mega-company. And while Laptop Magazine gave the Mini 12 a decent review, most the buzz on the net is pretty tame. Not to start out too negative, the Mini 12 has some redeeming qualities; a 12″ display, a super slim frame and a nearly full keyboard. The slim design and lack of an optical drive make it a prime competitor for the MacBook Air. And with a standard Dell low price of around $650, it’s hard to complain. But that’s where the fun ends and reality kicks in. You can see it clearly in the specs, the thin frame is where the comparison to the MacBook Air ends. The 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor makes for pretty sluggish performance with the pre-loaded Vista. And with only 1 GB of RAM, don’t think you will … Continue reading →
a

Since Sony started making the VAIO line of laptops in the late ’90s, they have been superior business and play machines. And with the newest laptop offering, the Sony VAIO VGN-Z590, not much has changed as far as superior products go. In terms of specs though, the new Sony VAIO VGN-Z590 has some killer additions. First and foremost, the Z590 is ultraportable, weighing in at 3.2-pounds. And with such a small frame, reviewers all over the net are blown away by the amount of gadgetry stuffed into the frame. The Z590 offers a Blu-Ray player, an Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 processor set that clocks at 2.53 GHz. And with a 13.1 inch display, the Z590′s nVidia GeForce 9300 M GS graphics card can do same damage. The Z590 took home an editors choice award from PC Magazine, which praised the laptop in its review. The Z590 is top-of-the-line and it carries a price to reflect the specs, ringing in between $3265 and $3791. Let’s take a look at the spec breakdown: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz RAM: 4 GB Weight: 3.2 lb Screen Size: 13.1 inches Graphics: … Continue reading →
a

PC Microworks just introduced a new laptop, the Edge, which features Intel Montevia Dual or Quad Core CPUs. On top of the blazing speed, the Edge features great stuff like EDVO/HSDPA broadband connection built-in. Other notable features include the Fingerprint security, GPS, Blu-ray/DVD support, and 8GB 1333Mhz DDR support. This might be the power laptop to get for the ultimate gaming/work experience. The only short coming I see is in the 8-cell battery which lasts up to 2 hours. But for a powerful laptop like this, you shouldn’t expect a long operation time, but great for replacing your cluttered PC. The Edge Laptop Line is based on the brand new Intel Montevina Dual and Quad Core CPUs. Never before has a CPU this powerful been offered in a 15.4″ notebook! Be among the first in the world to own this super-charged notebook platform with more versatility and upgradeability than ever before! Utilizing a breakthrough core arEdgetecture, featuring multiple cores on a single Edgep, the Core 2 Extreme is truly a breakthrough for computer performance.
