Hey Gang, I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving, or a nice Thursday if you don’t celebrate the holiday. I’m back today with a new hack and some laptop news from around the globe. The hack today is for all you Mac fans out there. This video will teach you how to use the iPhone as a wireless router anywhere you go. A great tip and excellent hack. You need an iPhone and it has to be hacked, or “jailbraked,” to run some of the software. As for the news around the net, everyone is out shopping today. And with so many great laptop deals out there, combined with a push for netbooks, I’m curious to see if laptops make big sales today. Smaller newspapers are covering Black Friday, with Best Buy getting most the coverage for its deals. PC World is reporting that analysts are predicting that mobile data will continue to be the next big movement in technology, with much of Europe already gearing up for the change. Just like me, cNet is wondering about the netbook’s future, and if the recent decision by AMD to stay away will force Intel to go all in or go … Continue reading →
a

eMachines have always been the low-cost alternative. But now with netbooks flooding the market, eMachines needs to step up its game. So, the company is releasing a full sized laptop for less than $400. Is the eMD620 woth it? Let’s see. As a Best Buy exclusive, this notebook is subpar. An Athlon 2650e with 1.6 GHz won’t get you very far in the office of on the net and the low 1 GB of RAM will surely lead to slowdown within a year. Plus, the little thing us pretty ugly, sports low battery life and only has two USB ports. Overall you are looking at a bad netbook with the only advantage being a bigger screen. Why not go buy a real netbook insted? There is no reaosn for this laptop to exist. Boo.
In a recent news roundup from The Week, the magazine cited the New York Times, saying that President-Elect Barack Obama would be the first president in U.S. history to have a laptop n his Oval Office desk. And, as a result, he will also be the first commander and chief with access to that wacky series of tubes, the Internet. Hopefully Roomba Cat won’t distract him too much. The folks over at ZDNet are putting together their top holiday gift guides, and it’s no suprise that the HP Mini 1000 is their top choice for a netbook gift. It looks like it’s going to be a very netbook Christmas for a lot of kids out there. The Inquirer is reporting that Best Buy will be slashing Apple prices by $100-$150 to compete this Christmas. As a result, there are rumors that the Apple Store might follow suit, but I doubt it Thanks for reading today, more laptop news and reviews tomorrow. a apple prices, apple store, barack obama, best buy, holiday gift guides, hp netbooks, Laptop Deals, Laptop News, mini 1000, new york times, oval office
a

The Gateway P-7811FX is Gateway’s first retail laptop available only through Best Buy. It’s a little older, but I thought it was worth taking a look at because its specs and design are really holding up against some really recent additions to the laptop market. Obviously, just by looking at it, you can see that the 7811FX fits right in with any number of current laptops in the design category. The orange piping is like totally right now. (Sorry.) But beyond looks, who are the specs on this $1,499 laptop? First, the 17-inch screen and the availability of a Blu-Ray drive make this a likely candidate for the center of a home media setup or a first-rate desktop replacement. The internal setup won;t have you gaming anytime soon, but reviews all over the web have found the Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB or Ram and the nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS to be substantial enough to cover your media needs. That includes solid load times for editing programs like After Effect and Photoshop. Overall, this slightly older Gateway notebook might be one of the best choices for the price this holiday season. Just because it’s a few months old, doesn’t … Continue reading →
a

Best of the Net: Alexander Wolf wonders why anyone wants a new laptop: [U]nless you covet a new MacBook, you’re not crossing your fingers in hopes of finding a shiny new notebook computer under the tree. Smartphones, netbooks, and digital SLRs, definitely. But laptops? Yawn! Dan Costa wonders if Netbooks are the new notebooks: But can the netbook replace the notebook? Here at PC Magazine, we learn by doing, so I hit the road with netbook in tow. cNet names Sony’s 18″ laptop it’s home movie favorite: [I]magine our pleasant surprise to find the Vaio AW125 to be less expensive than the other 18-inch, Blu-ray equipped laptops we’ve seen. John Morris looks at Best Buy’s newest marketing ploy: According to Best Buy customers are looking for a decent-size display in a thin and lightweight laptop, a backlit keyboard and a standard two-year warranty. Otherwise, it’s a pretty slow day out there in notebook world. Send me your news tips and hacks if you have them. I always love to post user ideas! a alexander wolf, backlit keyboard, best buy, laptop, Laptop News, laptops, macbook, Netbook Reviews, notebook computer, notebooks, pc magazine, roundup
a

Another laptop available through Best Buy, the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402 is based on consumer research and the final product reflects that. Stylistically, the Satellite E105-S1402 has a funky finish case and a backlit keyboard. But more than that, it packs some solid specs for a under $2,000 notebook. However, some flimsy plastic and poor interior design pull down what could be a spectacular setup. The folks over at Laptop Mag had some nice things to say, with the overall verdict seeming a little “Good, but blah.” In fact, for comparable specs at a comparable price, they even suggested checking out a MacBook. I can see that. The basic specs: Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz RAM: 4 GB Weight: 4.9 lbs.
For HP’s first consumer 13-inch notebook, the company too the advice of consumers and put out a powerful, reasonably thin laptop that works best for home couch computing. Simple design perks like a backlit keyboard and a remote make it competitive with the MacBook. Superior specs like the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor, the built-in 4 GB of RAM and a GForce 9300M graphic set make the HP Pavilion dv3510nr a fast, powerful system for minor gamers and professional web surfers. Laptop Magazine praised the dv3510nr for it’s superior WiFi abilities but pinged the HP for poor battery life. cNet also liked the dv3510nr, noting the notebooks fun features like a fingerprint reader and excess of ports. However, both reviewers noticed the sluggish touchpad. So, if you end up with a dv3510nr, make sure to add an optical mouse to the shopping cart. Overall, the dv3510nr is a great laptop for the couch, as you will want to stay close to a power outlet. Available through Best Buy, the dv3510nr has a great price point of $1,100. For that price, you can afford a power strip and a new mouse to go with it.
Microsoft isn’t one of my favorite companies when it comes to operating systems but as for mouse, I think they make better mice than Logitech and all the other mice companies out there. Microsoft is working on their new “Any Surface” Mouse that could change the world mouse market forever. I too have always wanted something like this because even my IKEA desk needs a mousepad in order for my Microsoft basic mouse to work. Seriously, I tested it out on granite, carpet, wood, and Samuel L. Jackson’s bald head*, and it tracked impressively the whole time. The 2.4 GHz BlueTrack comes in two varieties: A $100 rechargeable full-sizer and a $80 mini that runs on AAs. via gizmodo Press Release: REDMOND, Wash. ─ Sept. 9, 2008 ─ Microsoft Corp. today unveiled the world’s most advanced tracking technology, Microsoft BlueTrack Technology, which allows consumers to take their mice anywhere and work with confidence on more surfaces than before. Microsoft’s new proprietary tracking technology combines the width and power of optical technology with the precision of laser tracking to allow consumers to mouse on virtually any surface1 — from a granite kitchen countertop to the living room carpet. BlueTrack Technology will … Continue reading →
a
