eMachines have always been the low-cost alternative. But now with netbooks flooding the market, eMachines needs to step up its game. So, the company is releasing a full sized laptop for less than $400. Is the eMD620 woth it? Let’s see. As a Best Buy exclusive, this notebook is subpar. An Athlon 2650e with 1.6 GHz won’t get you very far in the office of on the net and the low 1 GB of RAM will surely lead to slowdown within a year. Plus, the little thing us pretty ugly, sports low battery life and only has two USB ports. Overall you are looking at a bad netbook with the only advantage being a bigger screen. In a recent news roundup from The Week, the magazine cited the New York Times, saying that President-Elect Barack Obama would be the first president in U.S. history to have a laptop n his Oval Office desk. The Gateway P-7811FX is Gateway’s first retail laptop available only through Best Buy. It’s a little older, but I thought it was worth taking a look at because its specs and design are really holding up against some really recent additions to the laptop market. Obviously, just by looking at it, you can see that the 7811FX fits right in with any number of current laptops in the design category. The orange piping is like totally right now. (Sorry.) But beyond looks, who are the specs on this $1,499 laptop? First, the 17-inch screen and the availability of a Blu-Ray drive make this a likely candidate for the center of a home media setup or a first-rate desktop replacement. The internal setup won;t have you gaming anytime soon, but reviews all over the web have found the Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB or Ram and the nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS to be substantial enough to cover your media needs. Another laptop available through Best Buy, the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402 is based on consumer research and the final product reflects that. Stylistically, the Satellite E105-S1402 has a funky finish case and a backlit keyboard. But more than that, it packs some solid specs for a under $2,000 notebook. However, some flimsy plastic and poor interior design pull down what could be a spectacular setup. The folks over at Laptop Mag had some nice things to say, with the overall verdict seeming a little “Good, but blah.” In fact, for comparable specs at a comparable price, they even suggested checking out a MacBook. For HP’s first consumer 13-inch notebook, the company too the advice of consumers and put out a powerful, reasonably thin laptop that works best for home couch computing. Simple design perks like a backlit keyboard and a remote make it competitive with the MacBook. Microsoft isn’t one of my favorite companies when it comes to operating systems but as for mouse, I think they make better mice than Logitech and all the other mice companies out there.
