Gateway P-7811FX Review and Specs

The Gateway P-7811FX is Gateway’s first retail laptop available only through Best Buy. It’s a little older, but I thought it was worth taking a look at because its specs and design are really holding up against some really recent additions to the laptop market.

Obviously, just by looking at it, you can see that the 7811FX fits right in with any number of current laptops in the design category. The orange piping is like totally right now. (Sorry.) But beyond looks, who are the specs on this $1,499 laptop?

First, the 17-inch screen and the availability of a Blu-Ray drive make this a likely candidate for the center of a home media setup or a first-rate desktop replacement.

The internal setup won;t have you gaming anytime soon, but reviews all over the web have found the Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB or Ram and the nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS to be substantial enough to cover your media needs. That includes solid load times for editing programs like After Effect and Photoshop.

Overall, this slightly older Gateway notebook might be one of the best choices for the price this holiday season. Just because it’s a few months old, doesn’t mean you should forget about it.

While the 9800 and 8800 are in a lot of respects equivalent, this model actually sports a 9800M GTS. I have to strongly disagree with your assessment of its gaming capabilities, as it has one of the most powerful video cards on the market, to say nothing of the 4GB DDR3. I ran 3DMark06 on a display model at Best Buy, and even with Vista and all the bloatware pre-loaded onto the thing, it consistently (I ran the test twice) got a score of about 8600 – one of the highest scores you’ll see for a machine under $2500.

They’ve been replaced with the 7805u, which is a mere $1050. The 7805 has a slightly lower res screen (1440×900), but it has a 320GB HDD and 1GB of VRAM. I’m satisfied with mine. About 9500 3DMarks on average.

the p-7811 is simply awesome. 17″1920×1200 resolution, nvidia 9800 gts with 512 ded. 4 gigs ram. what I like most is that its so user friendly and upgradable. allows you to upgrade processor through a bay door. I upgraded to a t9800@2.93 in less than half an hour. has 2 seperate hard drive bays. I get consistant 16500 3dmarks05. 14800 cpu marks. this with vista 64. bluetooth doesn’t come standard and requires some surgary to install but its easy enough. its a nice 15.00 upgrade. here’s the skinny, I had a clevo quadcore m570etu w\ 280 gtx and my gateway 7811 at half the price gets better benchmark scores. no xps lightworks, no fingerprint reader, no facial recognition, just an awesome very upgradible and reliable workhorse. you think I love it???
