The time may have come when netbooks are given away for free by the mobile carriers, according to the Head of a Linux advocacy group, the Linux foundation. He was speaking at a Beijing forum of prominent Chinese business people.

Many companies such as AT&T already sell subsidised 3G netbooks in the US and in fact the same is beginning to happen in China, but to actually give a netbook away in the similar manner as a mobile phone is, may just be one step too far. However, the prediction coming out of this meeting is that within a year a Linux based netbook will be free to the user who signs up with a certain carrier.
