The convertible netbook tablet device from Dell the Inspiron Duo has a great looking style, being able to switch from a netbook to a table through a unique pivotal mechanism. However, the touch screen software has been letting it down by all reports and this is where the Linux based operating system Jolicloud comes in. Jolicloud has been designed to work on netbooks because is not heavy and works well with Atom based processors, see it in operation on this YouTube Video. These are the features for the Dell Inspiron Duo the convertible tablet style netbook; 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel capacitive multitouch display, a 1.5 GHz Intel Atom N550 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB, 7200 RPM hard drive. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium, has a 4 cell battery, a 1MP camera, 2 USB 2.0 ports, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.
It was a while back when MSI originally came out with a desk top computer built into a projector type case. Well this did not go anywhere and so the idea had been forgotten by many of us, but not by the designers at MSI for they have now come up with a similar idea but as a slightly different concept. This new concept appears to bring inner workings of the MSI WindPad 100W tablet device into a case that has a projector built into the top, currently this is concept so what are seeing is nowhere near the finished article. However, this does look a bit clumsy, yet the prospects for such device sound rather interesting. The projector is capable of moving 180 degrees, so it can deliver an image on the wall or table top and as such could also be used to project a virtual keyboard onto a table top.
The Toshiba NB550D is a new netbook with a ten inch display, running the AMD C 50 Ontario chip at around 1 GHz dual core CPU, with graphics controlled by the Radeon HD 6250 graphics card and very low power consumption of 9W which is great for producing superior graphics. The low power output means that the AMD processor can work as good at the Atom processor from Intel, but when working with the Radeon graphic card this is a netbook that can easily handle DirectX 11 and produce 1080p high definition video. But although the netbook is about to go on sale in the Australian and European markets, it looks as if there may be a long wait before it turns up on the Toshiba US site.
All the talk of the demise of the netbook may have been a bit premature, shipments for this year are already looking to touch the thirty million mark. While there is a new a processor too, the Atom N570 is clocked at 1.66 GHz was seen at the CES 2011 in Las Vegas, it will replace the N550 with its 1.5 GHz. One of the machines expected to use this processor will be Lenovo, their IdeaPad S100 netbook is due out by the end of February, but others are sure to follow, especially the likes of Samsung with the NC110. However so far it seems that Asus are yet to decide what machine they are going to use first up with this processor, or are they really preparing to slow down the production of netbooks in order to concentrate on the more exciting tablet market! 2011 is going to be an exciting year.
For a moment the competition were feeling a bit of relief when report were going around that Acer were going to be phasing out all of their netbooks in favour of tablets. However, the company have issued a statement that completely denies that they are thinking about this action. In fact it seems that Acer will not be even be launching any new tablets with the latest Sandy Bridge platform from Intel, so it seems that for now at least netbooks will definitely be on the Acer Menu! “Acer recognises that the computer market is changing: As PCs are no longer used to only create content but are more and more becoming consumption tools, new devices and new form factors are appearing,” the manufacturer said in a statement. “This means the range of devices available to users is getting wider and tablets are just another piece of the mosaic. Therefore they will find their space next to netbooks and notebooks, without taking over.” Source [Eee PC] a acer, Acer Aspire Netbooks, netbooks, New Netbooks, Tablets
a

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has been given a big boost with the addition of ARM chips and the introduction of an 8.9 inch touch screen that allows children to operate the machine much more easily. Edward McNierney, chief technology officer of OLPC has been explaining these changes and what that will mean for the OLPC project, in fact, there is a video on YouTube where he goes over the features and benefits of the updated version of the OLPC. These are the two main changes to the XO-1.75 mini laptop; The XO-1.75 is the first OLPC laptop to use ARM chips, a 1GHz Armada 610 chip from Marvell Technology, reducing power consumption by half – to just 2-watts The XO-1.75 will have an 8.9-inch touch screen, so children can use their fingers instead of a jumpy mouse or delicate keyboard to interact with the XO Source [Geek] a 1.75, arm, Edward J.McNierney, fedora, laptop, linux, marvell, olpc, OLPC Netbooks, processor, xo
a
