One thing that you don’t often see is a full sized USB port installed in a UMID netbook, but that is not going to stop everyone from going without or being forced to use a mini USB port. The netbook in question is the UMID mBook BZ as we know this has no USB port, but could use one, so why fit it yourself? It seems from the images that the actual installation process is fairly easy to do, but that of course is going to depend on how technically minded the user is. The images below will take you through the process, but don’t come running to us if it doesn’t work! Source [Pocketables] a diy usb port, Laptop DIY, UMID, USB Port fitted to a UMID
a

However, in France it seems that a firm called Sagencom have done just that with the Spiga Pocket Book. Click Here to View in Full Screen Mode Here’s a video of China’s HiVision $98 Linux Mini-laptop equipped with a MIPS processor, 1GB flash drive, and some more basic features. I do like this small Linux system as it’s versatile for doing a lot for less. Of course, having a Google Chrome Browser on these mini-laptops would be extra special. HiVision makes the worlds cheapest Linux laptop at $98 using a new cheaper MIPS based processor (perhaps the Longsoon or the Ingenic), WiFi, 1GB flash storage, it runs Linux, has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out, voice-chat, skype, multi-tabbed Firefox browser support and Abiword for word processing. Automatic and secure online software updates. Their current model is running a smooth and pretty snappy Linux user interface. In this video, I got to borrow a review sample of the laptop overnight, and I try to show you all the browser and other software interfaces in this extended video review of this cheap MIPS based laptop. Embedded is the way that I hope that most cheap laptops are going to be based on in the near future, Google will … Continue reading →
a

The new Raon Digital Everun Notebook comes with a touchscreen and lots of “small” functionalities for the power user at the current predicted retail price of $879 USD. It looks pretty small to me and I do like that couple with a 7″ 1024×600 pixels, which provide you with plenty room to scroll. Of course, the price doesn’t justify the features provided in my opinion but there’s enough power in this small 7-inch beast. (I do like the Windows XP, no more Vista on any of my new comps.) This balance of leading-edge power, battery life and miniaturisation doesn’t come cheap but in the world of pro-mo devices, this is really on-the-mark. The recommended sales price is $879 (US, before tax.) which means its way, way cheaper than the other high-performance UMPCs, the Sony UX and the Q1 Ultra Premium and it includes a 16mm pitch keyboard and easy 3G upgrade path. With Windows XP Home (yes, I know some of you would be looking for TE or Vista) it will really fly. via engadget, umpcportal Other Resources: Link to Technical Specs of Raon Digital Everun Notebook a 1024x600, 7" Netbooks, battery life, beast, functionalities, high performance, keyboard, Laptop News, … Continue reading →
a

The SuSE Linux version will be a little cheaper, we suggest you to buy that and install your Windows XP separately to save some money. (given that you have your Windows XP disks) Laptop Pimp’s Verdict The laptop specs look very good, especially with the choice of 80GB hard drive and the operating system. A lot of HP laptops come (forced) with a Windows Vista, an operating system no one wants anymore. Kudos to MSI for not becoming corrupt to Microsoft’s backhanded negotiations. We also do like the SuSE option for people who already have Microsoft Windows XP disks. Plus, having a Linux-setup might be great for those consumers who have had hard time installing Linux on their own. MSI Laptop Video It looks like Germans have got their hands on the samples, here’s a video preview of the MSI Wind laptops: Download … Continue reading →
a

Asustek Computer shipped around 1.4 million notebooks in the first quarter of 2008 and ranked number eight in terms of market share. However, if Eee PC shipments of around 700,000 units are included, the company’s shipments jump to 2.1 million units, surpassing those of Fujitsu and Apple, to rank in sixth place, and closely trailing behind Lenovo who shipped 2.2-2.3 million units, according to a recent report from IDC. via digitimes a 1 million, apple, definite proof, eee pc, first quarter, fujitsu, idc, laptops, lenovo, market share, notebooks, number eight, pc shipments, pc vendor, UMPC, UMPC
a

Intel’s Eco PC might be Intel’s challenge to EEC Pcs and all the other mini-laptops coming out. This is how the Eco PC (or the Classmate PC) is going to look. So far it’s rumored to be a 10-inch laptop with a 9-inch display that weighs a little under 3 pounds and will sell for sub-$400. It’s supposed to run on a 900MHz Celeron processors, with 512MB of RAM, a 40GB hard drive, built-in WiFi and Ethernet. It has decent specs for a $400 laptop. via devicepedia a 40gb hard drive, celeron processors, classmate pc, eco, intel, Intel Laptops, Kids Laptops, laptop, laptops, UMPC, wifi
a

I really wish mini-laptop manufacturer start naming their machines with some sense instead of all these “eec pc”, “Il1pc”, etc…etc… Well, to get to the point, this CTL Il1PC comes with a 60GB harddrive at $449. I wouldn’t buy one yet even though I am an early adaptor, wait till the mass tries it and the prices drops in half. (Did I say I was an early adaptor? Sorry sometimes I am the other way around…) To me, it still looks very shabby, I think manufacturers could do better. Putting the IL1PC’s 1.0GHz VIA C7-M processor and 1GB of RAM to work, Windows XP Home runs smoothly and takes 53 seconds to boot up. There is little to no lag toggling between applications, and launching programs such as Windows Media Player and Firefox takes an average of 4 seconds.
It looks like Bestlink’s Alpha 400 linux-based UMPC might become the “cheapest” mini laptop you will be able to own at $250 and possible sale at $180. With the recent explosion of UMPCs by big manufacturers, this sure looks like its going to be another hit. Especially since a lot of desktop applications are being developed as web counterparts including Microsoft Office, there’s no need for the laptop user to carry all his applications on the laptop, maybe on a 8GB SD card. What might be better is if they included a WiMAX card, which should be coming soon from Sprint and make the world go crazy for the mini-laptops and the super fast broadband internet connection. The Alpha 400 is based on a 32-bit XBurst CPU from Ingenic Semiconductors clocked to 400MHz. Based on an “industry standard” RISC-based architecture (possibly MIPS?) the chip reportedly runs Windows CE as well as Linux. It also uses SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) instructions to accelerate media performance, and uses an “xburst” pipeline. Fabbed on 0.18-micron technology, it boasts low power requirements and a small footprint, Ingenic claims. The Bestlink Alpha comes with 128MB RAM and 1-2GB of internal flash.
