For most of us replacing the battery or upgrading the RAM is the limit for DIY computer maintenance, but if a group of Stanford University have their way that taking apart a laptop could become just as simple as changing the ink cartridge in a printer. The Bloom Laptop Concept is a design that allows the laptop to be taken apart in ten easy steps, yes it was ten and they did say easy! The case is made from the same materials and the components simply slot into position, no tools are needed and yet this is concept laptop that can easily be taken apart and put back together again in just five minutes! Details of the Stanford Students Design Recyclable Laptop with Autodesk Inventor Software; “We used Autodesk Inventor software often during the ideation phase to experiment with the design,” said Aaron Engel-Hall, a Stanford student and team member. “We created 3D shapes to represent the hardware we had to design around, and the parametric design of Inventor software let me put in different parameters so that all the model dimensions would update immediately. I was also able to experiment with various thicknesses for the case enclosure, making it … Continue reading →
a

Check this Asus Eee PC 701 4G, this was one of the computers that started the whole netbook industry and now it is setting the trend with a keyboard mod that has been designed to help out users that somehow forget what function keys have been put in there for. Well actually, it has been designed to show the user exactly where the function keys are and what they are for, which is handy for the user who simply cannot remember where the function keys are. Therefore, by highlighting them in black it is thought that they will be getting used more as they stand out from the rest of the keys. Here are the specs and features for the interesting Asus Eee PC 701 netbook: 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and runs Windows XP.
The Mirasol displays from Qualcomm have been around almost a year now, the prototypes were seen at the CES 2010, but it seems that the company is still nowhere near to releasing the final product, with the latest prediction being early next year, which is a bit disappointing. The Mirasol uses a low power option as so would be interesting for users that do a lot of travelling etc and require the battery to last the day out at least. According to sources, the devices are currently in the production stages and so it should not be long before these display units are on their way to the relevant manufacturers for installation.
When laptop and netbook manufacturers first brought out the high gloss finish it seemed to be cool and many consumers went out of their way to get their fix of gloss. However, it soon became apparent that this was a terrible mistake, the glossy lids soon became an annoying feature as fingerprints, and just about any other mark began to show up on the lid. So if you have a glossy lid and wished that you had gone for the matt finish, what can you do about it? There is a nice piece on Lifehacker that does just that and believe it or not the solution is so simple! All you need is a piece of that green coloured 3M Scour pad and yes you run the gloss off the lid, once finished the user ends with a matt finish, but we are not promising anything, do this at your own risk!
I just got an alert from one of my readers that they cannot change brightness on their ASUS UL30Vt after a resume. The same thing has been happening to my ASUS UL30Vt but I found a quick fix over at ASUS’s download page, the BIOS update fixes the issue. BIOS 210 Solve the bug of the brightness can not be changed after resume from S3 in iGPU mode. You can go download the latest BIOS 210 at ASUS download page (or check for latest one) or download BIOS 210 here. After unzipping the downloaded file, run the WinFlash under ASUS Utilities. (If you uninstalled the ASUS Utilities, you can download just the WinFlash also at ASUS’s website.) Then browse and select the new BIOS file you unzipped earlier like this: Next, hit “Flash”. When flashing is done, hit “Exit” and your UL30Vt should reboot. You can verify that the BIOS has been updated by hitting the Del key at boot-up then F2: Your brightness settings should work flawless now. a asus ul30, asus ul30vt, asus ul30vt-x1, atk acpl update, fix brightness, Laptop DIY, Laptop News
a

You know one of the number one reasons why laptops don’t last more than a year is because you don’t use a laptop stand, especially if the laptop CPU fans are located at the bottom of the laptop. Most of the older laptops have fans on the bottom (God knows WHY they designed it that way) and if yours does, you might want to consider making yourself one of these laptop stands out of a tray with full air-flow to the bottom of your laptop. (so your laptop lasts longer!) Also, if you are going to be buying a laptop stand, look for ones with good bottom air-flow, some are indeed horribly designed and do nothing to help the laptop cool. a how to, Laptop Accessories, Laptop DIY, Laptop DIY, laptop stand, laptop stand, make, tray
a

While Microsoft is still working on their new version of Courier tablet that rumored to feature two touchscreens, someone has just hacked their Dell Mini with touchscreens and an extra LCD display to get a “hacked” Courier. This might be a good example to follow but one thing for sure, do you really want to carry this around? My Dell Mini forum member pakkei decided he couldn’t wait for Microsoft to release the Courier and thought he’d make one himself, converting his Inspiron Mini 9 into a slate-format tablet and adding in a second, 9-inch USB touchscreen. via slashgear a courier hack, dual touchscreen, how to, Laptop Design, Laptop DIY, Laptop Hack, make, notebook
a

It is ok having a highly portable laptop, but try using it standing up. Xpadder enables you to map keys to controller buttons from a gamepad. The idea is to have Xpadder sense a change in orientation, and program it to press the correct key-combination used in iRotate, in order to rotate the screen accordingly. via mydellmini a accelerometer, add, dell mini 9 hack, how to, Laptop DIY, Laptop Hack
a

Check out this incredible Dell Mini 9 that someone hacked into a mini tablet! Brilliant! If you know a little bit about disassembling laptops and hardware, this might be a doable project for you. The base model is a Dell Vostro A90 (bluetooth, .3mp webcam, 1GB RAM, upgraded 16GB SSD). The touchscreen is the Hoda Technology solderless touchscreen kit. I started this project back in June, and it was 80% complete then. I took a break for a few months then finally started filling in the gaps in the frame with plastic epoxy. It took me another few weeks to come up with a way to mount the power switch and the covers for where the hinges were. It is fully complete and functional now, though I will probably go ahead and paint/primer the body filler and paint the powerswitch silver from its current green color. I also am looking into adding an accelerometer to automatically rotate the screen, similar to an iphone. via hackaday a accelerometer, dell mini 9, dell mini hack, dell vostro, diy, Laptop DIY, Laptop Hack, laptops
a

Since netbooks these days come with 5 to 10+ hours of battery life, they can be a great source for charging your USB devices. Of course, if you don’t want to turn on your netbook and charge your USB gadgets, there’s a hack that shows you how to add USB charging ports on an MSI Wind netbook battery. This hack should be pretty safe as most USB gadgets run on 5VDC, which is practically harmless. DJ Josef Průša, the author of the iPhone/Arduino/MaxMSP/OSC hack from iPhone Hacks, just let me know about this great project he made from a spare MSI Wind battery; a nice and juicy battery pack for USB devices. He was originally looking for something to power his Monome 128, but it ended up being great for his iPhone as well. And the battery can still be used in the Wind, apparently. via make Download latest version of Flash to view video!.
Here’s a rather interesting laptop DIY where Mike has built a laptop stand that will fit perfectly snug in his car’s cup-holder using PVC pipes. This might beat the socks off many in-car laptop stands out there that cost big dollars. Heck, I am gonna go make one this week! Great DIY Mike! The commercially made units also bolt to the floor and take time and tools to install and remove. I always thought there had to be a better way. One day I had a brainstorm. I figured out a quick and easy way to build a laptop tray for my Tacoma that cost a little over $30! Thats 1/10 of what the commercially made units cost! And it only took me an afternoon to build it. via hackaday a brainstorm, cup holder, diy, Laptop Accessories, Laptop DIY, Laptop DIY, Laptop Fun, Laptop Fun, Laptop Hack, Laptop Hack, Laptop News, laptop stand, laptop tray, pvc pipes, socks
a

Missy over at the Keetsa blog has some great insights on how to make your laptop greener with simple questions you can ask yourself before buying a laptop and adjusting some settings for existing laptops: How-to green a new laptop (questions to ask) 1. Manufacturer ethics? – Check the Greenpeace rating of the brand or manufacturer you plan on purchasing from. See how the company fares on the list of sustainability, as this may make or break your decision to go and support them. 2. What type of display? – Look into the type of display the proposed laptop has, currently LCD is good, LED is better and the planned OLED is most energy efficient. 3. What type of casing? (and components) – Laptop casings now come in a variety of formats, including bamboo, recycled materials, and planned for the future are corn-based cases. Look at the inside components also and see how they are assembled? New models have it set up so that the laptop is easily upgradeable. Instead of throwing out a laptop because it has exceeded memory capacity, you can upgrade with a simple click or module change. This will extend its life and keep it out … Continue reading →
a
