I mentioned last week that Radio Shack will be offering a $99 Acer Aspire One netbook, and I have some more info for you this morning. As it turns out, AT&T is sponsoring the deal, which comes with a 2-year contract with the wireless company for a 3G subscription that costs $60 a month. So, you save a couple hundred buck for the Acer, but you get stuck in a contract situation with AT&T. So, is it really a deal? Not in my opinion. The reduced price is nice, but don;t get fooled into a contract to save a hundred bucks or so. Laptop Pimp says avoid this “deal.” a acer, Acer Laptops, asprie one, at&t, deal, Laptop Deals, Netbook Reviews, radio shack
a

Hey gang, I know you might be tired of hearing about Christmas ideas, but with netbooks more popular than ever and an economic squeeze on most people’s wallets this Christmas, it’s the perfect time to talk about why the under $500 laptops make a great gift idea. cNet has their top picks for laptop gifts out, and as you can see, netbooks are all the rage. The Dell Mini 9 is their top pick for a netbook, and with a recent price drop, it’s mine too. Although, I do also like the HP Mini 10. For medium to full-sized laptops, the cNet crew picked the Gateway T-6838, which is a little surprising to me, but I’ll let them explain: a christmas, dell mini 9, gateway t-6838, hp mini 10, Laptop Reviews, Netbook Reviews
a

Last year, my favorite gift was a 750 GB Western Digital External Hard Drive. I keep my music and movie collection on it, as well as photo and document backups. It helps me keep my MacBook clean. But, it’s big and bulky and I can’t really lug it around with me. So this year, I think some of my Christmas money is going to go toward a new portable hard drive device of some sort. Laptop Mag has a great gift guide, which also includes a video. (Sorry, no embed.) But I was wondering if any of you have picks for your top portable storage devices. If you do, leave them in the feedback, and maybe I’ll do a roundup of out top reader suggestions. a hard drive, Laptop Accessories, laptop mag, portable storage, USB, western digital
a

Ars Technia first turned me on to the new developer build for Mac OSX is out there. Looks like the build has over 100 fixes, but Apple is still asking for input concerning Mail. Ars said: Apple is asking developers to bang on MobileMe’s automatic syncing feature with portable Macs and on networks with medium-to-high latency or constrained bandwidth. Apple wants to hear from developers who work behind firewalls and corporate proxies, and it’s also interested in hearing if changes sync between Macs and the MobileMe website within “a reasonable amount of time” when automatic syncing is turned on. So, have at it dev kids. a apple, developer build, Mac Rumors, MacBooks, OSX
a

The Lenovo Thinkpad is one of those laptops that really bridges the spectrum when it comes to cost and specs. The Thinkpad T400 is right in the middle of it all with a modest internal setup that’s great for business or heavier home computing, which should be expected for around $1,400 to $1,600. Right off the bat, the T400 offers one huge perk in switchable graphics, which means this machine can speed up your day to day computing and save battery life on the go with it’s lower power Intel GMA graphics set. But you won’t sacrifice higehr end video and graphics with the ATI Mobility Radeon setup wunning in sync with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.53 GHz. Not too shabby. But, of course, all this bulky internal work brings up the weight. And, Lenovo hasn;t really caught on to the design trend. So, if you don’t mind a heavier, less attractive laptop for work, the T400 is perfect. But, for more specilaized home laptoping and for those with a design flair, keep looking, as there isn;t anything here you can;t find elsewhere.
Cyber Monday might have given all the laptop chip-makers all the proof they needed that netbooks are the next big trend, and if sales keep moving up like they are, netbooks might be the new laptop. cNet is reporting that AMD and a number of other internal parts makers will be entering the netbook market next year. This is a huge change for AMD, who recently aid they would be staying away from netbooks. However, AMD has said they will be looking to on-up Intel’s 10″ netbook market with a larger 12,13 and 14-inch line of netbooks carrying its processors. Interesting that a chip maker is making such an impact on market design. Check out the article, as it gets into 3G, another new and important trend, and a number of other advances that will propel netbooks next year. Meanwhile, no new rumors about Mac’s plans as far at netbooks are concerned. a amd, intel, Laptop Rumors, Netbook Reviews, Netbook Reviews, rumors
a

There isn’t tons of information out there on the new Asus Eee PC 1002HA, but what we do know is pretty impressive. Starting just under $500, this is one of the first strictly business targeted netbooks. They have a very serious case of MacBook lookalike syndrome, which never hurts. As another note to design, Asus is saying this has a more sizable keyboard. Internally, most the specs are about on par with netbooks, and it adds up to the standard mid-2 pound range for the overall weight. One upgreade is a 160 GB drive and the inclusin of 10 GB of online storage space, which will be the next big trend in computing. This will be a great business netbook, but it’s the tyoe of machine that will be great for the average user, too. Operating System: MS Windows XP Home Processor: Intel Atom N270 Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz RAM: 1 GB Weight: 2.6 lb Display Size: 10 inches Graphics:n/a Storage Capacity: 160 GB Networking Options: 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, Bluetooth Primary Optical Drive: none a 10" Netbooks, asus eee pc, ASUS Netbooks, Laptop Reviews, Laptop Specs, netbook, Netbook Reviews
a

AMD is out. Intel is way in. Mac is undecided. And yesterday, Nvidia decided it would walk the fence when it comes to laptops too. They are interested, according to PC World. But they want the market to mature first. Microsoft is also weighing in on netbooks, saying the tiny computers run the risk of “canabalizing” the world’s most populer and unstable OS. Oh, waht a shame. The Times is reporting battery company ZPower will be placing all its cards with Silver-Zinc batteries, which are better for the earth and you power rating. It’s always netbook news these days, as Nokia is rumored to be busting into the netbook game sometime next year. a amd, batteries, intel, Laptop News, mac, microsoft, Netbook Reviews, nokia, nvidia, zpower
a

Watch out! This Sony Vaio VGN-TT190 comes with a price — $4,345.00. Yikes! But, is it worth it? Let’s take a look inside and see. This ultraportable is full of great stuff. And, at 2.8 lbs, you aren’t going to find a notebook lighter and more powerful then the VGN-TT190. I sort of wonder how they packed in an optical drive, 11″ display and wireless support, along with a great processor, into under three pounds. Plus, Blu-Ray! Are you kidding me? And while 11 inches might be small, you can use the HDMI-out port to ship your Blu-Ray movies to a big screen. Of course, looks wise, the Sony Vaio line is always stylish. As another bonus, the Intel Core 2 Duo U9400 is a low power processor, saving battery life and not sacrificing run speeds. How cool is that? So, if you want top of the line when it comes to home or business computing, this is definitely the machine for you. Sure, it’s freaking expensive, but it also gives you bragging rights for the next year.
